Dr Nishant Sharma is currently Ramakrishna Bajaj Chair Professor and Professor of Mobility & Vehicle Design (MVD) at IDC School of Design, IIT Bombay. He teaches vehicle form and aesthetics, mobility design, computer-aided industrial design, user-centric way of designing products etc. His research interests are nature and form, bionics,human-powered mobility and participatory design. He finished his B.E. (Production Engg. in 1998) from NIT Surat, M.Des Industrial Design in 2001) from IIT Delhi and received his PhD from IIT Guwahati. Before joining academics, he had a successful career as a vehicle designer in automobile OEMs (Indian and MNCs); General Motors India, Aprilia Motors (Hero Global Design), Bajaj Auto Ltd etc. He pioneered vehicle design education in India by developing philosophy and writing the complete curriculum of India’s first specialised Transportation & Automobile Design program at the reputed National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad. He was then instrumental in setting up the Mobility and Vehicle Design program at India’s premier technology institute, IIT Bombay. In his role as a Principal Investigator, Prof Sharma has received funding from various ministries of Government of India (Human Resources, Ministry of Railways, Ministry of Science and Technology) and big corporates like Volvo Sweden, Samsung Korea, Thermolab Lab India, CEAT Tyres India etc. for a broad range of mobility and industrial design-related researches/projects. He was on the panel of experts for a leading global auto maker for four years to review their future launches in India.
